| Well, Oliver can tell us more about the Anglia and perhaps the Cleopatra (I know he has knowledge of this strange craft). |
Indeed
First some notes on the Anglia. She was built for Messrs. William Watkins Ltd in 1866 and was the first iron-hulled tug to be built on the Thames. Her 700hp engine also made her the most powerful tug at the time. Her three-funnel configuration made her instantly recognizable, and she was soon called the "Three-Fingered Jack". She was able to bunker 90 tons (!) of coal, which she needed because, as one author puts it "her coal consumption was legendary". Despite her workhorse occupation, she was a beautiful ship that handled very well. She was so successful that she won an award for tug design 10 years after she was launched.
Watkins sent the Anglia on a number of very lucrative long-distance tows. In 1875 she towed the liner Syria from St. Helena to Southampton. In 1878 she brought the obelisk barge Cleopatra from El Ferrol to London. There was a lot of media attention around this event, and the Anglia got her share of reflected glory. She continued in service until WWI, when she was employed as a barge, hauling coal across the channel.
As for the Cleopatra, you'll find an exhaustive and well-researched account here: http://www.thamestugs.co.uk/THAT-DARN-NEEDLE!.php
And here is a picture of my 1:250 card model of the little barge, with removable obelisk. (to be had for free at http://www.waldenmodels.com )
This was fun! Next time I'll pick a hard one
Cheers,
Oliver |
