This was a tough one Oliver but your clues pointed me in the right direction.
It's the steam tug Anglia, nicknamed "Three Fingered Jack".
The fruit of her second exploit is Cleopatra's Needle.

Here you can see an illustration the Anglia in her 3 funnel configuration whilst towing the Cleopatra (the name of the "vessel" containing the obelisk):

Well, Oliver can tell us more about the Anglia and perhaps the Cleopatra (I know he has knowledge of this strange craft).

In the meantime here's mystery ship 612

How odd, something brought me to this yesterday, but I did not quite make the connection. Are we becoming telepathic ?

That's a great picture adrift! I hope Oliver can give us some details.

A couple of clues for mystery ship 612:

Launched 1865.
Still around today (in a way)

Indeed Wink

First some notes on the Anglia. She was built for Messrs. William Watkins Ltd in 1866 and was the first iron-hulled tug to be built on the Thames. Her 700hp engine also made her the most powerful tug at the time. Her three-funnel configuration made her instantly recognizable, and she was soon called the "Three-Fingered Jack". She was able to bunker 90 tons (!) of coal, which she needed because, as one author puts it "her coal consumption was legendary". Despite her workhorse occupation, she was a beautiful ship that handled very well. She was so successful that she won an award for tug design 10 years after she was launched.
Watkins sent the Anglia on a number of very lucrative long-distance tows. In 1875 she towed the liner Syria from St. Helena to Southampton. In 1878 she brought the obelisk barge Cleopatra from El Ferrol to London. There was a lot of media attention around this event, and the Anglia got her share of reflected glory. She continued in service until WWI, when she was employed as a barge, hauling coal across the channel.

As for the Cleopatra, you'll find an exhaustive and well-researched account here: http://www.thamestugs.co.uk/THAT-DARN-NEEDLE!.php

And here is a picture of my 1:250 card model of the little barge, with removable obelisk. (to be had for free at http://www.waldenmodels.com )

This was fun! Next time I'll pick a hard one Wink

Cheers,

Oliver

Well done Uwe, it is the Darra.
The website you have found gives a good history of the ship with pictures including this one when the Darra was spruced up and fully rigged to represent the emigrant ship Charlotte Jane for the Canterbury Centennial celebrations in 1950:

I've been trying to find a picture of the real Charlotte Jane to see how accurate the remodelling was and found the rather nice model of the Charlotte Jane:

Hello Uwe,

Just to invite you giving a hint.... Smile

The ship reminds me vaguely to a class of ships named 'monitors'.
(At least model, size and placement of the propeller rather fits this type)
I guess she is not USS Monitor?
